Course Information

This course will help you become active listeners and speakers who can interact in the international scene. English has become a tool for global communication. It is used as an additional language by people around the world who want to promote business, scientific, economic, and personal growth. The wide variety of people who use English means that we are likely to encounter diverse and varied communication styles..

The focus of this course will be on listening and speaking. You will discover how listening and observation can help you greatly improve your communication skills. You will learn about the pronunciation, enunciation, timing, and rhythm of speech. You will have many chances to use these points in order to develop your own personal communication style.

We will make extensive use of online materials in order to consider aspects of effective international communication while at the same time hearing the opinions of experienced speakers with diverse backgrounds. You will have the chance to develop your own communication style through reflection and practice. You will help your classmates do the same by asking questions and making comments.

If you are serious and work hard, by the end of the semester you will:

Class time will be spent discussing topics that you study for homework. You will have many chances to explain your ideas and to learn the opinions of your classmates. As speaker, your job is to explain your ideas as clearly as possible. As listener, your job is pay attention and ask questions if you do not understand. As time goes by, you will deepen your understanding and learn how to explain things more clearly. The more actively you participate, the greater your development will be.

Course expectations include active participation, respectful attention, serious consideration, and sincere effort. I expect you to come to class prepared, to use English as much you can, and to make your best effort. The effort you make and demonstrate is the most important thing to me. You should ask questions and help other students whenever you can.

Grades will be based on effort, weekly homework assignments, in-class work, presentations. Homework assignments will require at least one hour every week. Students who have perfect attendance will receive bonus points at the end of the semester.
