Reading - Read to learn |
This is the page for general information about your course. Here you will find homework assignments and course information.
Reading is a powerful way to access information. The more you read, the more you know. The faster you read, the more you learn. The more languages you can read, the broader your perspective can be. Good reading skills in English can give you quick access to global perspectives on any topic of interest. This knowledge will help you grow as a professional and as a person. If you are serious and work hard, by the end of the semester you will:
Class time will be spent discussing topics that you read about for homework. You will have many chances to explain your ideas and to learn the opinions of your classmates. As speaker, your job is to explain your ideas as clearly as possible. As listener, your job is pay attention and ask questions if you do not understand. As time goes by, you will deepen your understanding and learn how to explain things more clearly. The more actively you participate, the greater your development will be.
Weekly homework assignments will include the preparation of a News Journal. For each News Journal, you will find something written in English about a current event that you think is important. You will read your selection and take notes about the facts, your viewpoint, and the questions you have about the issue. You should also include the key words and phrases that you think we need to know to discuss and understand the issue. News Journals are an important part of your studies. If you are absent for any reason, you should send me your work by email.
I expect you to come to class prepared, to use English as much you can, and to make your best effort. The effort you make and demonstrate is the most important thing to me. You should ask questions and help other students whenever you can.
Grades will be based on effort, weekly homework assignments, in-class work, and group projects. Students who have perfect attendance will receive bonus points at the end of the semester.
