Comparison of Hospitality

Comparison of Hospitality

by Maiko M. (3rd year)

I'm interested in many differences between Japan and foreign countries. During this summer vacation, I experienced internship in Guam, then I found differences in quality of hospitality. I'm interested in it, so I researched the topic.

I thought Japanese hospitality was normal before I went to Guam, but I noticed differences. Japanese hospitality is very high quality. For example, when the visitor is in trouble, even if nothing is said, employees are going to address the problem themselves and try to help. It is a great thing. In addition, Japanese try to do high quality hospitality for anyone.

On the contrary, it was different in Guam. As for them, it is common to do high quality hospitality only to VIP. It is not rare, and it is common for people in the world, outside of Japan. Actually, during internship, I saw this thinking of foreigner. For example, when an ordinary person comes to the hotel, the bell service person only carries the luggage to the room, but when a VIP comes there, their attention is completely different. The person who is more than a manager level shows them into the room, and explains the room or the good view from the window, and then the bell service person carries the luggage to the room. In addition, the hotel prepares many kinds of fruit or champagne, etc, for some VIPs. I was very surprised. This action cannot be considered in Japan, because Japanese think inequality in hospitality is rude, so a person who works at hotel aims to provide equally high quality hospitality to everyone.

After I experienced it, I think Japanese hospitality is very nice, and we should continue this behavior. On the other hand, foreign countries should imitate Japanese thinking of hospitality. For that reason, we should spread Japanese hospitality, but it is only my opinion. I think there are many opinions about hospitality, so I would like to ask a question, "What do you think about hospitality?"
